Puppy School
This is put together with years of dog ownership and breeding to help insure a happy and safe new family member
Always crate or kennel your new puppy when you are not able to be with them. Your puppy has learned that this is their safe place and a place of rest. Make sure the bedding does not have any buttons that are able to be chewed off.
Check your house for poisonous plants and the yard as well. Hanging wire or cords can be a real problem during puppy time. Make sure all medications and human toys are not accessible.
Do not feed table scraps as there are many human foods that can make them sick or even life threatening. No one wants a begging dog every time that they sit down to eat. When buying treats you want American made not just American packaged .Many overseas products have caused sickness and even death. We recommend cow hoofs (available at tractor supply) and use Milk Bone dog treats.
Toys need to be strong and no plastic eyes or noses sewn on as they can be a choking hazard. Kong brand is great for crate toys as well as cow hoofs. Balls bought at pet store are great as well but do not leave in crate with puppy at night.
All toys, bedding and feed/water bowls need to be cleaned regularly . Plenty of fresh water is mandatory for healthy pups as they drink a lot.
Your puppy has been trained to puppy pads and blank newsprint. Place adjacent to crate and after feeding encourage them to use the pads. Repetition and patience is called for during this time.
Do not allow your puppy to chew on human hands and feet, that is what their toys and chews are for. No jumping off furniture or out of a vehicle as a young puppy can injure hips and joints. House manners and outside manners are very important for a good pet. A quick correction to bad behavior is with a stern voice and the command NO ! Labs want to please and will learn quickly.
Puppies have a short attention span but learn quickly, consistency is key. They will be what you train them to be and worth the investment of your time as it produces a awesome family member. Play is a everyday necessity for this breed as they are very active and love to interact with every family member.
Petco and PetSmart have great beginners training programs and it helps both the puppy and adults and children also to grow together.
Regular veterinary visits are a must and if you follow their guidelines they will grow up to be happy and healthy dogs.
Last but not least Labradors are the #1 dog breed for 7 years in a row in America. They are smart ,loving and happy and want to be a big part of your family.
Congratulations of your 1st step and may you have years of great memories.
